Najran is located in the southwest corner of Saudi Arabia, close to the Yemini border. It is both one of the most fascinating yet least visited places in the Kingdom. It has been inhabited for about 4000 years and was once a major stop on the old frankincense route. When visiting Najran one will see the influence of its proximity to Yemen in the people as well as the architecture of many of the buildings.
Najran is one of the Kingdom’s most modern cities and is also the capital city of Najran province. Najran city is surrounded by orchards and trees as well as encircled by mountains. It is its own paradise tucked away in southwest Saudi Arabia.
Najran was the last important stop on the frankincense route before the caravans took either the eastern or western route. (The frankincense route was the ancient caravan route from the incense-producing areas of southern Arabia up through modern-day Saudi Arabia and into Jordan, Syria, Egypt and the whole Mediterranean basin).

Najran has one of the kingdom’s newest and best museums, with displays on the formation of wadis and deserts, archaeological finds from the area, local crafts, tools and photos of the area taken by Harry St John Philby, the famous diplomat, explorer and spy. It is in front of the ancient site of Al-Ukhdood which was inhabited for some 1,500 years, from 500BC through to the 10th century AD. |

Being an agricultural city, Najran is famous for its beautiful gardens and public parks. Peaches, apricots, apples, grapes, lemons and oranges are grown on a wide scale.
The 73-meter-high Najran dam is one of the region’s tourist attractions, giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy scenic views on both sides of the dam. Historical artifacts available in the area include rock drawings and inscriptions, particularly in the city of Al Okhdood, south of Najran city. This large sand-covered fortress gives the impression that it once possessed high perimeter walls built with giant stones similar to those used in building the famous Egyptian pyramids. Najran’s landmarks include the “Rass” stone, a 2-meter-high granite stone.
