   I am currently reading The Great Theft from an imminent scholar in Islamic law (teacher at UCLA): Khaled Abou El Fadl. He is one of the most important and influential Islamic thinker in the modern age. This book might be more for non-muslims but the author roots his arguments in long-standing historical legal debates. Everything is well explained and this book is extremely interesting.

    I think “The Heart of Islam” by Seyyed Hossein Nasr is really good as the book is written for a Western audience and is unbiased. The author speaks of Islam as a very wide spectrum of beliefs rather than just as a monolith. It also talks about the historical and social contexts which I think are important in understanding modern controversial issues related to Islam.
