Saudi Arabia: Are There Art and Design Institutes in Riyadh?

AB Comment:  I personally know the Saudi artist who has made the Saudi Art & Design Workshops a reality.  Anyone interested in learning art whether it be in the form of cuisine, expression through ceramics, drawing or the beautiful medium of calligraphy, will enjoy these opportunities.  Not only does one experience and learn a form of art but this is also an excellent venue for Saudi and expatriate women to get to know one another too.

  1. I have never thought of having visual arts and cooking together in the same program. Still it sounds like an interesting group of courses. Am I correct in assuming this is a women only set of classes?

Given the importance of figure drawing in western art, one wonders what they are going to present as an “introduction to Drawing”. (I have a BFA in fine art and my first year drawing class was all figure drawing so I really wonder what their curriculum will be.)

  2. This looks really nice!

  3. If i were there i would for sure be in that black forest cake class :-)

  4. Hi Jerry,

    The classes are women only.

I personally know the artist and her work is incredible. She has her Masters in Art with a specialization in ceramics. She had an extraordinary exhibit at the Corcoran Museum in WDC back in the early 2000’s where the theme was Muslim women and Islamic art.

One of her favorite pieces of mine is where she actually made a mold of her own face, glazed it and then had it wrapped in chains. This was part of the Muslim women theme. That was a very courageous piece to have on public display for a Saudi Muslim woman. Another piece she has that I love is a painting (acrylics) of a Saudi woman dressed in the fashion back in the days prior to discovery of oil climbing a stairway which led nowhere.

When you think about it, art and food go hand in hand for with food, a large part is in the presentation, mais ous ncest pas? (forgive my horrible spelling today)

  5. Thanks for this one , Carol.

As an artist considering coming over from South Africa to teach ESL, I am so grateful to see there is opportunity for this kind of expression.

So few of the blogs share this degree of cultural richness. I have hope again…More than that, it sounds exciting!

To Jerry, there’s so much more than the human form to appreciate or learn about in art. Surely the richness of colour and texture alone are essential basic elements to art?

  6. Carol, those artworks sound very interesting! Can’t you post a few pictures? And it would be great to ahve an interview with her!

  7. I’ll see what I can do!

  8. I want to join this

  9. I know that this workshop is from 2011, but by any chance are any of these still going on now? Do you know of any studios or workshops for ceramics in Riyadh? Thank you.
