Woohoo – A Scene not seen often in Saudi Arabia!

I know…now I am probably sounding childlike with my enthusiasm but I do feel kind of like a kid as I look out the view from my window.  Having spent so much time of my life in parts of Asia or the Middle East region, trust me, it has been a long time since I had the opportunity to simply watch the snow come falling down.  Yes, it will snow in some parts of Saudi Arabia but when it happens there is also the same sense of awe and mystique.

So I wanted to share the views with you whether you’ve seen snow or now, the very first snowfall of the season whereever is always kind of magical!  The views you see are from North Carolina.

  2. hahahah

i lovvvve seeing snow since i had lived for a while in Saudi Arabia …….snow makes me feel child too ..i love to play outside and trow ppl by a heap of snow lol yeahhhh sound would be always………

  3. I posted a few hours ago and we now have almost 3 inches on the ground and it is still coming down! However per the local weatherman, it should all go away tomorrow. So I for one am enjoying hearing the sound of the snow hit my window since now it is dark. I tried to persuade my son to go out and take night photos since he is such a talented photo (unlike Mom here) but he looked at me like “oh yeah…you want me to go out in snow and freezing rain with my beloved camera for night pictures of weather…” So instead we reminisced about earlier times when he was a little boy and his joy at seeing the first snows.

I think everyone should experience real snow at least one (or two or three) times in their life…as long as they don’t have to go and shovel out!

  4. My husband just went out (yes, in the dark at 8:30) and built a small snowman complete with a John Deere cap. We are most always happy to see snow because we don’t get it a lot like the Northeast and parts of the Midwest. So I totally understand your awe of it. Glad we can enjoy the first NC snow together. :)

  5. aw, it sounds so cute and good for your hubby!! What part of NC are you located? We are not far from Charlotte in the Lake Norman area.

  6. I’ve never seen snow in my life..From Saudi to Texas to UAE and soon to be back in Saudi :( so unfair!!

Enjoy this beautiful time of the year Carol..it’s the festive season now and I have a feeling its returns will be wonderful for you and your lovely family :)

    Happy Hijri New Year (yesterday)
Merry Christmas in advance (I just wanted to be the first to say it
Happy New Year in advance (same thing :) )

    Peace

If you’re still in the UAE you can always go to Ski Dubai. Ok it’s not natural snow, but it’s close. You can ski in it and make snowmen.

  8. @ Saudi Jawa

The thought of wandering into a mountain-sized freezer puts me off every time I think of going.

    One day….

  9. Thank you Peace Seeker for the wonderful words!

We have about 3 inches of snow although chances are it will melt off in the next few days. However it makes everything look so fresh and crisp right now.

  10. Hi Carol =) I was posting “for the love of power” on my blog. I was so disheartened while I was writing the post up, that as soon as I posted it I came to your site. This post reminded me of the very first time seeing snow fall, that it cheered me up. Thanks =)

  11. Thank you for sharing these pics Carol! I’ve only been to Ski Dubai >.< and being from Australia, there's not much chance to see snow unless one can fork out enough to visit the ski fields which are farrrr away from me :( I'll be thinking of your weather while attempting to enjoy the Australian summer though!

  12. I stayed for two and a half years in Simla but have been able to only walk through thick snow on the ground – I regret it very much that I could never see the snow actually falling from the sky. Somehow I was always away from Simla on the days when snowfall happened and came back only later.
    Enjoy the snowfall!

  13. Carol, we are probably 2 or 2.5 hours northeast of you between Greensboro and the Durham/Chapel Hill area in Alamance County. It’s neat to think we are so close since most of the time you are sooooo far from here. Enjoy the snow with your grandson. :)

  14. My response, as a Saudi, would be: Snow!? What is snow?? ;)

    Enjoy it, Carol :)

  15. I’m quite used to seeing snow but we have been living in Tennessee for 2 years now. We miss it.

  16. And not surprisingly today it is starting to melt away! The roads are now clear and while there are still some spots with snow, it will likely all be gone within the next two days. However my heart goes out to those who are in the Washington, DC/Virginia area for it sounds like a record snowfall is still going on as I type these words!

@Susanne – if you find yourself coming to the Charlotte (Lake Norman) area please let me know! We really are not that far apart (at the moment) at all.

@Ellen – I’m trying to remember just where but I think my husband said he experienced snow one time while he was in Australia. He was based in Canberra but traveled all over the country.

@Daisy – Simla is so beautiful and majestical! And yes, Kashmir can get a lot of snow!!

@Simple Girl – I am so happy to learn that this post cheered you up. Thank you for commenting!

@Saad – you were lucky not to see snow in China! In 2001 I took a trip overland from China to Pakistan and although it was summertime, when going through the Kunjarab Pass it was snowing hard!

@Jerry – For some reason I thought Tennessee typically had snowy winters?

  17. @AB

The Eastern parts in the Smoky Mountains can have real snow. Where I am only a few feet from Mississippi (about 350 ft above sea level), snow is something the locals don’t really understand.

  18. Hi Carol,
We have snow now too in the Midwest…and it is sooooo beautiful. I have to make my snow angel and a snow man sometime before I leave to go back to KSA. Looks like we will have at least a bit of a white Christmas after all. It it’s gotta be cold, Let It Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow!!! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

  19. beautiful pics of snowflakes (photomicroscope)…

  20. Wow, I wonder if we can track the snow fall country to country?

Here (England by the way) there’s been wide spread snowfall in most parts of the country.

It may be late (10:30pm) but I’ve just come in with my child after playing out in the snow lol.
Yep, I felt that childish mood overtake me so got my abaya etc on and we went out there to be the first ones to make foot prints and snowmen etc out there.
At least we did not look too crazy when a few of the other neighbours allowed their kids out too lol!

The down side is the freezing fingers and toes when you get back in doors. Oh the Pain!
(Smile still plastered on my face)

  21. Oh making snow angels and snowmen bring back such memories… and of course the snowforts and snowball fights…. see, who needs video games! (LOL)

@Jerry – thanks for reminding me of the size of Tennessee!

  22. OMG.. are those.. LAWNS.. and (gasp) front DOORS?!

  23. You’ve got it Andrea…and no WALLS! (smile) I told my son that I feel like his neighborhood is a modern day Norman Rockwell painting.

  24. Carol, we are two feet deep in the snow! Yesterday I almost didn’t get my car out; I needed help, and we have been riding through the snow. But my camera fell in the snow and the memorystick got wet so I can’t prove it :(
Today I think I won’t be able to free my car, so I won’t see the Tarq.
We had such a Dickensian day: riding, then lunching with friends, and we all brought our instruments and music and had a ”musical soirée”
(à la Hyacinth Bucket but with better singing) ;)
It’s too beautiful here! Saturday-morning I rode in the snow with crystals shimmering all around me! Riding on my fluffy wintercoated Arab horse thorugh the snow! Heaven! Zora loves it, she has been with me on my rides through the snow and jumps around and burrows her nose in it!

  25. AAfke this sounds delightful and I can just imagine your inspiration for future paintings with Tarq in the snow with ice crystals in his mane! I just hope that you have not had to do any shoveling!!!

As I look out my window now in North Carolina is a clear, crisp and sunny day with virtually all of the snow gone. Yesterday my grandson and I even managed a walk around the neighborhood since it was all dry.

  26. Be glad that is all you got! Here in DC we got nearly 2 feet, though I’m sure you heard. I only just got out of my neighborhood today and it wasn’t a fun drive. The kids started their Christmas break 3 days early, lucky monsters. My dog is 1/2 Husky and even she had some trouble on Saturday evening towards the end of it all. You should see the snow “mountains” in all the parking lots, its insane. However, the view from my back deck is amazing, the Occoquan river actually looks clean for once. HAHAHA Hope you’re doing well.

  27. Hi Monica! You’re right….I was glued to CNN the night of the snowstorm and watching the amazing rate (2 inches per hour) that the snow was falling in WDC. I guess you are pretty much guaranteed a white holiday. Our snow is now all gone!

  28. All this talk of snow, brrr makes me cold, it’s freezing cold and icy in Mi, or atleast i feel that way and my mind is alrady in sunny florida where we will spend the rest of the year .. yessss!!!
warm sun and the beach… 2 more days to go..

but yes when the kids were little we did enjoy the snow angels and sledding. or they enjoyed the sledding and we worked our muscles showelling.

I’m done with the cold and snow, i’d much rather move somewhere warm, but i guess that’s not in my fate :-)

  29. I know where you are coming from Radha! I am happy to have seen the snow but it is not something I would want on a regular basis. I’ve now spent more than half my life in hot places and could not imagine living permanently in a place with heavy winters!

Have a wonderful time in Florida! I have so many family members who migrated there permanently and live in various places across the state.
