  3. To curtail freedom of speech, freedom of writing, is the same as declaring in so many words that you are a tirant without right to rule, without support of the majority, and a coward as well.

  4. that was so lame

  5. Only until you are the one prohibited from speaking your mind, cowardly person who doesn’t even dare to show his/her name on the internet.

  6. Yes, it’s always “lame” to desire freedom, dignity, kindness and rights until YOU are the one denied those things.

  7. I assume from the video that this might refer to a specific person. If so can anyone post some details.

  8. Reminds me of a quote

“If the freedom of speech is taken away then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”

  9. I’m not sure of the genesis of the video but it is not new. It has been around for a while and I decided to share it.

  10. Jerry M–I have looked for details and found none. There are many Saudi writers who are banned, but most continue to publish in other Arab countries and hope that their works reach Saudi via imported books (often in languages other than Arabic), some have chosen to live and write in other other countries and other languages. Zuheir Kutbi, a man, is one who was banned from writing books or journalism in 1998 within the time frame mentioned in the video.

I had a while ago come across an article on literature in Saudi Arabia, with a list of banned writers, but cannot find it again. Otherwise it is mainly specific books which are banned, or media articles.

This video is very striking, but I was disappointed to find that the youtube link has the key words “saudi women freedom to drive” not freedom of speech or journalism or written expression, and all the related videos were about women daring to drive. An interesting if disappointing conceptualization of freedom of speech in Saudi.

    Radha–nice expression.
