People think saudiarabia is a desert so it does not rain much here. Come on, that does not mean it does not rain in saudi arabia at all! Its impossible for a hurricane to come in saudi arabia. But just to tell you that Saudiarabia DO HAVE TORNADOES! During the december to Januray time, the storms from Europe is common. And usually they are very powerful and once produced a huge wall cloud in Yanbu with a really heavy cloud burst ever seen in yanbu. Deserts have poiwerfull storms than the tropics, due to hot desert, the upward lift is really high and when it falls apart at the evening, it produces a massive amount of rain, and extremly heavy like in a hurricane…..

U know what.. Saudi arabia doesn’t have much hurricanes and tornadoes but whenever it rains in saudi arabia its really heavy with strong winds.. Thats what happen in Yanbu where I live I don’t know for all of the places..

Just wanted to add that here in Saudi – there is indeed earthquakes and tornados. In fact just last week there was a tornado here in the mountains – definitley a tornado reached from the clouds to the bottom of the mountain – although it disperesed rather more quickly than those in th US. Also Saudi is on a fault line and it is not uncommon to have earthquakes – especially in the north west. It is not strictly true that Saudi does not get tornados. A few years ago I saw video footage of two funnel clouds taken by a group of Philippino workers who had visited Sharma on the Red Sea coast. They were definitely tornadoes and not dust devils as the funnels reached up to the cloud ceiling. However, compared to those occurring in the United States they were quite small.

@Mark, The sand storms in Saudi are indeed an experience! I do feel
so badly for folks who are asthmatic as they can suffer so much from
the sandstorm. You’re right – a sandstorm offers very unique and
interesting photo opportunities.

I was amazed the first time that, after a sand storm, I went out to my car. The dust was so fine that it had adhered to my fingerprints where I had touched the car window the night before. Though my allergies and my daughter’s asthma hate the sand storms, I think the light is great. Wrapping my DSLR in plastic and playing with the white balance has lead to some great photos.
