At our Islamic Class last night, we played a game to see how many of these kinds of questions we knew the answers to. Thanks for posting this information.
My pleasure A2S.
Good post, with lots of good information. While I’m not Muslim, but Christian, I find it interesting to see that there is reference claimed in the New Testament (#36). However, I’m not sure I can agree with it. The Douay-Rheims Bible is the only translation in which I can find the word “Paraclete” used a total of four times – John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26, and 16:7. All of these scriptures reference the Holy Spirit. More specifically, allow me to give you Jesus’ words in the passage from John 14 in context:
“15 If you love me, keep my commandments. 16 And I will ask the Father: and he shall give you another Paraclete, that he may abide with you for ever: 17 The spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, nor knoweth him. But you shall know him; because he shall abide with you and shall be in you.”
There is much open to interpretation (as is usually the case), but verse 17 seems to clearly indicate a spirit, invisible and indwelling. Is this what is claimed in Islam?
And, if so, then isn’t verse 15 equally weighted? We could carry on for a while on the commandments of Jesus, but I know of none that can justify many of the things done in the name of Islam, or Christianity, in our world today.
I’m not trying to be argumentative, but merely trying to understand.
Maa shaa Allaah, jazakumullaah khayr for posting this.
Lofter,
I am not qualified to answer your query but a clarification from someone who can respond would be interesting.
Subtropic – my pleasure.
Hey Carol!
Alhamdulillah, and thanks for this.
I’m going to make this into a puzzle for the inmates (I’m Muslim chaplain).

I’m pleased to share that the Chicago Sun Times chose to pick up and publish this post: http://www.suntimes.com/news/blogentries/index.html?bbPostId=CzCso0daZ4bnXBEZgr4vZTMqJCz15gex493D58BAsLdPYguUIV
I really enjoyed this ‘’speed-learning” post on the prophet!
Carol:
I am glad you are pleased that the Chicago Sun Times chose to “pick up” your post. It speaks highly of you, and helps to drive your blog traffic.
I have a question though. Did they ask for permission to re-publish your post, or did they merely “pick up” the post literally? I have had the problem of my work being republished online without my permission. Just wondering. Sorry for changing the topic here, but am curious. Thanks.
I
Hi Safiyyah,
You may wish to check out http://www.blogburst.com. My blog has been accepted by blogburst which in turn allows publishers to reprint postings while giving full credit to my blog.
Hi Lofter
Muhammad is mentioned by name in the original scriptures. In the old Testament in the song of Solomon chapter 5 verse 16 in the Hebrew language Muhammad name is mentioned followed by “imm” which is a plural of respect in the Hebrew language. Even in Arabic, unlike English, we use the plural to show respect.
In the new English Testament, Muhammad name was translated to “all together lovely”. Names shouldn’t be translated, should they? My name is Khalid in Arabic and it’s still Khalid in English. It’s not acceptable to call me “The Eternal” in English (my name should remain the same in all languages)
I don’t know which version of the Bible you accept. For me, the older the version, the more authentic it is. The Qur’an hasn’t change through the course of time. The Qur’an 14 century ago is the same Qur’an today. The Qur’an in Makkah is the same Qur’an in Moscow and New York. If we assumed that a change occurred in the Qur’an through the course of time, I’d stick to the oldest version I can trace. (this is only my personal opinion and my sense of logic)
To the best of my knowledge though , and you can correct me , the old testament According to Christian authorities was preserved in the Hebrew language and the new testament in the Greek scripture (language)
All the Best
P.S. I’m neither knowledgeable in the Qur’an, nor in the Bible.
Oh, I never heard of Blogburst. That’s good! It gives publishers a valid place to glean from
Thanks for answering my question!
Thank you, Khalid, for taking the time to help me. It is most appreciated. While I lost my Old Testament Interlinear volume in my divorce (I still have the Greek, just no longer the Hebrew), I can only search the internet. And my searches have shown me “all together lovely” or variations thereof. It is generally put forth that Song of Solomon is about Solomon himself, although a few dissenting scholars will say that Solomon wrote the book.
However, going with your explanation, I must assume then that the entire book is written about Muhammad – or at least those sections titled “The Beloved”. Is this your assertion? If so, that gives me a large segment of scripture to cross-reference. If not, please explain.
I agree with you regarding the oldest version being the most likely the most accurate. I also agree with you that proper names shouldn’t be translated, but they seem to be throughout most scriptures. I see in Delhi’s post that the name of Muhammad only appears four (4) times in the Qur’an, with all other references to him written in other terms. It is the same with Christ, especially in the Old Testament, but also in the New Testament. My name, in literal translation, means “God’s Peace” – but no one has ever referred to me in that way!
I will continue to search for truth and understanding, and thank you for your time.
Hi Lofter,
Please accept my apology for not reading your comment earlier. Summer courses started, so seldom I find time to do the things I used to do during holiday. Usually summer semester are intensive and what we take in 15 weeks in the regular semesters is condensed to 3 / 6 weeks in summer.
True Muhammad peace be upon him is mentioned 4 times in the Qur’an and Ahmad is mentioned once, so in total He is mentioned by name 5 times. Jesus peace be upon him is mentioned 25 times in the Qur’an and Marry peace be upon her is mentioned 34 times. Concerning the mentioning of Muhammad pbuh in the bible, I cant claim that I’m qualified to discuss this topic. However, I highly recommend reading a booklet called “What the Bible Says About Muhammad” by Ahmed Deedat; Published by Islamic Propagation Center International (IPCI). If you cannot find the book, I’d not mind sending it to you. I believe you are in the US, so it’s going to be easy for me to mail it to you. you can email me your address to ( internet at thelinguist .net ) I didn’t write the @ sign and I left one space before the .net so spammers will not realize that this is an email:) (Sometimes we can fool spam’s)
I am from trinidad and tobago. age 50 and this has refreshed my memory amd also taught me a lot as well.
I wish our two teenagers could find the time to read it as well, but they are currently involved in exams.
thank you and Allah Almighty reward you.
PBUH vs SAW vs Shalallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam.
I don’t know what happen with english and other language.
The part that I know is phrase Shalallahu ‘Alayhi Wasallam can not be replaced with SAW or PBUH (peace be upon him).
Because Shalallahu Alayhi Wasallam is “du’a”, prayer words, that can not be compare or replaced to other language.
This is like question:
Which most sharp between stick or sword?
no need to answer, everyone should be knows about it.
But if you translete like this:
The Prophet Muhammad Shalallahu Alayhi Wasallam (May Allah bless him and grant him peace) or Isa Alayhis salaam (Peace be upon him) or Jibreel Alayhis salaam (Peace be upon him) is still ok.
I Afraid this is called bid’ah in Islam.
Bid’ah = something that replace/change/make new rule in Islam that The Prophet and shahabah (Prophet friends) never teach.
Let us take care Islam be original.
thank you for taking the time to comment, Abu Ajis.
