You asked for it so I’ll try to describe as best as I can what a typical Saudi home is like.  First of all the homes here will be surrounded by a high wall to ensure privacy from the outside.  It is also a nice security measure as well.  Unlike the US, homes here are usually referred to as a “villa.”Because Saudi society traditionally has segregation of the men and women, a Saudi villa will have no less than two separate salons (the American living room).  Each salon will also have a washroom conveniently nearby.  Each salon will also usually have its own separate and direct access to the dining room.  In many cases there are sliding doors or screens at each dining room access point to maintain the privacy between men and women.Unlike America, Saudi villas do not come equipped with “built in” kitchens.  One must purchase their stove, refrigerator, fan, sink and all cabinets, cupboards and countertops.  Additionally Saudi homes do not come equipped with heating or cooling and whatever type of unit or system one desires must be purchased and installed.  The same also applies for carpeting.  A Saudi kitchen will typically have a room adjacent which is used as a “store” (pantry).  There are no shelves so if one wants shelves, they must be installed.  Saudi homes will have a “hall” closet but again it is a small room which one can either install shelves or have a bar installed to hang coats and jackets.  The bedrooms are again large rooms but without closets.  Most people will purchase cupboards which are like an armour having both built in drawers and a closet area.  The bedrooms usually have attached washrooms as well which is wonderfully convenient. Most villas are also equipped with “servants” quarters since it is typical for one to engage drivers and housemaids.Depending on the size of a villa, one may have a courtyard/garden area outside as well as a swimming pool. However bear in mind that given the climate here, it can be a real challenge to have a brilliantly blooming garden or much greenery.
