The traditional dress of the Saudi male is a long white gown like creation called a thobe.  The link below will provide an image on what a typical and traditional thobe looks like.  However in the winter season the men will switch from the white thobe to ones of darker colors such as blacks and browns.  Under the thobe the man will wear long white cotton pants, white t-shirt and of course white cotton underwear.  Now I personally think in the winter season when a man is wearing a dark thobe, dark shoes, dark socks, the white long cotton pants are a bit incongrous.  In my opinion I think it would look nicer if the long cotton pants were color coordinated with the thobe.  I have tried asking several Saudi men about this but thus far their reaction has been that “men always wear white” or “the weather is only cool for maybe two months so why bother with other colors.”  As I’ve pondered even more about the mens thobe and if I had the resources, I think I’d enjoy trying to create a “designer line” of mens thobes for everyday wear as well as business.  Imagine a mans thobe made in soft denim for those casual occasions…or business thobes with ones monogram on the sleeves or on the front pocket.  One could even design matching vests or jackets to be worn over the thobe during the cool winter months.  I can also see nice embroidery on design (subtle of course) on the cuffs.www.desertstore.comOn top of the head the man wears the ghutra or smaugh.  This is the long headress which is typically in a white and red checked pattern or solid white.  One may also see the ghutra in a black and white checked pattern which is typical of those worn by Palestinians or worn by one who shows affinity for Palestine.  In Saudi Arabia the most common are the red and white checked or solid white.4:49 AM - 0 Comments0 KudosAdd CommentEdit - Remove

  1. I like the thob Maghrebia, the Morrocan thob, for wearing at home. It is really comfortable.

  2. It seems like many of the younger guys in the family will wear an Egyptian style or Morrocan style thobe at home but the older traditional guys will stick with the standard white in the hot months and dark brown or black in the winter months!

  3. What is the name of the decorative tie worn at the neck of the thobe? I cannot find reference to it anywhere on the web.

  4. UAE ex-pat,

Welcome! I’m not sure and actually have only seen that tie specifically on the UAE thobes!

Hopefully another reader may have more info.

  5. [...] some good old fashioned humor.  The head dress that a Saudi man wears upon his head is called a smaugh.  It can be either red and white checked or pure white or even a crème-colored off-white.  (some [...]
