Many businesses in Saudi will have hours which are different from those accustomed to a Western environment.  It is not unusual for a business to not open until 9am or later and be open for a few hours until reopening in the evening.  This is in part due to women’s inability to drive and easily get to places during the day as well as the intense heat which also impacts and keeps many people inside.  As a result businesses will often stay open as late as midnight and business can be brisk.Laundry services are both a popular and competitive business here.  Due to the nature of the business, laundries will tend to work longer hours than other service-oriented business.  It is also pretty typical here for laundries to offer pick up and delivery services at no extra charge.For the Saudi families which do not have a housemaid, many will take all of their ironing to a local laundry.  The cost to have a pair of jeans or a men’s thobe or other outfit ironed is about US$0.50 per piece which is a reasonable cost.  Some laundries may even be a little bit cheaper.  Therefore I have become spoiled in always having nicely pressed and creased jeans whereas back in the States I’d typically just settle for the “casual unpressed look” being as I hate to iron or did not have the time to iron.The local laundry we choose to use offers pressing services, regular laundry services, dry cleaning and tailoring services.  If we do not use the pick and delivery service, an attendent will come to our car instead of us having to get out and go inside.  All of these nicecities are offered due to the competition.  Oh, and before I forget to mention, not only are the services same day services but the majority of laundries stay open until midnight seven days a week. 1:23 PM - 2 Comments – 0 Kudos – Add Comment – Edit - Remove
