For the Saudi woman who works, she is expected to do it all:  work, maintain the home and take care of the children.  Yes, she is expected to be the wonder woman and she also accepts that role.Saudi professional woman typically work in banks or as teachers and professors as well as in the medical field.  There are also women-owned businesses in fashion and other types of retail stores.  In the professional workspace unless a business is women-only, segretation remains and a business will host a “women’s only area.”  This is where the professional woman will have her offices and may or may not continue to wear the abaya throughout her workday.  Most businesses make concessions for their female employees in that they will work shorter hours as it is understood women must also be available for their children and family.  During any meetings where men are present, the woman will continue to cover at least by wearing her abaya.  The headcover (hijjab) is optional depending on the woman and her choices.Work hours for women (as well as men) can vary greatly.  The majority of government offices for example work from 0800 – 1600.  Schools and businesses can have split hours which are also around prayer times.  Because of the culture here which prohibits women from driving much business is done in the evening hours between 1900 and 2300.The woman who does not work outside of the home is equally busy.  Her day is usually dedicated to caring for the children, keeping up the home and preparing the meals.  Because the Saudi schools start so early with some children catching their bus at 0630 it is not unusual for many women to go back to sleep after they have seen their children off to school.  They will typically start their day of cleaning and cooking in the afternoon  right before the children return from school.  Many Saudi women will entertain themselves with Arab soap operas or music playing as they perform their daily duties in the home.  In comparison to the States, a much smaller percentage of Saudi women will take time out to use the internet or read a book. The majority of Saudi women do not place an emphasis on working out.  The society and culture does not necessarily support fitness centers for women.  There are some fitness centers, usually associated with a hospital or clinic and are few and far between as compared to those available for men.  Walking areas are limited and it is not usual for a Saudi woman to choose to go for a walk unaccompanied and by herself.  Their entertainment is watching tv, going to the many malls which abound in the Kingdom and visiting with friends and family with the emphasis strongly on visiting with family.12:28 AM - 0 Comments0 KudosAdd CommentEdit - Remove
