Camels – from Australia to Saudi!

Tonight I saw a disconcerting feature on Al Jazireya.  The feature was about camels in Australia.  First I learned that Australia has the largest population of wild camels IN THE WORLD!  And as a result, all of these camels are beginning to cause a problem.  The feature discussed how Australia was attempting to export the camels to countries in the Middle East region and Asia but found that the high export costs made this venue prohibitive.  Therefore other alternative measures being taken are to slaughter the camels for either camel meat which is sold in supermarkets or ground up and sold as pet food.  Eck!  It seems to me that some other options should exist for these poor creatures as well.  For example, why not try and cultivate an interest and following in camel racing?  Camel racing is incredibly popular in the region here.  Or how about an ‘Adopt an Australian Camel” or “Save the Australian Camel” program?  It concerns me that the feature presented a view that slaughtering these creatures was the best option. Now on to a comment about camels in Saudi.  I was in a discussion earlier with several Saudis about the camels in Saudi Arabia.  They seem to believe that there are no longer any wild or indigenous camels in the Kingdom.  If anyone reading this posting knows differently or can add some insights, it would be appreciative.  I am also doing research on this topic and will provide my findings as well.
